On October 9, the University of Toronto’s Lawson Climate Institute celebrated the launch of Existential Politics, the latest book by Professor Jessica F. Green. The evening featured a lively panel discussion, networking reception, and book signing with the author, bringing together students, faculty, and members of Toronto’s climate and policy community.
Lawson Climate Institute’s Academic Lead, Policy and Sustainable Finance, delivered opening remarks to a sold-out audience who gathered at U of T’s Munk School for the event. Moderated by Jill English, CBC’s international climate producer, the discussion explored the political and economic forces shaping global climate action. Panelists included Professor and author Jessica F. Green; Catherine Abreu, Director of the International Climate Politics Hub; and Fate Saghir, Senior Vice President and Head of Sustainability, Experience, and Brand at Mackenzie Investments.
In Existential Politics, Green argues that climate change is fundamentally a political problem, one that governments have misdiagnosed by focusing on emissions accounting and market-based mechanisms. She proposes a bold alternative: leveraging international tax, finance, and trade institutions to curb the influence of fossil asset owners and empower the emerging green economy.
The event, hosted by Lawson Climate Institute and sponsored by the Environmental Governance Lab, underscored the importance of critical dialogue between researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders in driving climate transformation. Attendees also had the opportunity to meet the speakers and purchase signed copies of Green’s book.
Existential Politics is available now through major booksellers including the U of T bookstore. Learn more at www.greenprofgreen.com.
